Diagnosis is always the first step when it comes to UTV maintenance and repair. Only when you understand the nature and cause of the problem will you be able to take appropriate action to resolve it. That’s why the experts at A&H Sales & Service have created this UTV troubleshooting guide.

Battery Issues

If your UTV’s battery isn’t working as it should, start by checking to see if it’s dead or undercharged. A dead battery will need to be replaced, while an undercharged battery can be charged using a tender. If you’re still having problems, check the terminal connection. Grease the terminals, treat them using anti-corrosive, and tighten them. If your UTV uses a refillable battery and the electrolyte levels seem to be dropping more quickly than they should, check to see if the battery has any cracks or holes.

Engine Trouble

There are a number of possible causes for a UTV engine that isn’t putting out as much power as it should. This can be anything from an empty fuel tank or clogged injector to a dirty or broken spark plug, ruined ignition coil, or wrecked crankshaft position sensor. Check each of these parts to make sure they are still intact and functioning.

If your UTV’s engine seems to be overheating too easily, check that the cooling system is still working. Refill the coolant on a regular basis. If you find evidence of a corroded coolant flow path, flush the coolant system. Other possible causes include a loose or broken radiator cap or a broken fan.

A UTV engine that is slow to start may be caused by low fuel flow. Start by inspecting the fuel tank, filter, electric fuel pump, and injector. Other possible causes include water in the fuel system or a weak battery.

General Problems

Other issues to be on the lookout for include brakes that grind or otherwise don’t function properly. Possible causes include a lack of brake oil, the presence of air in the braking system, or a loose plate or clippers. If the transmission starts making odd noises, try replacing the gears. A UTV that appears underpowered may be suffering from a sliding CVT transmission, a malfunctioning parking brake, or disc brakes that aren’t uncoupling completely.
