Getting Your Tractor Ready for Spring

For farmers around the country, spring means the start of the busy season. It’s time to warm up the tractor for a long year full of hard work. If your equipment has been lying idle for too long, you’ll need to get it ready. That’s why A&H Sales & Service has created this guide to preparing your tractor for the spring.

Fluids Inspection

Cold weather can cause the liquids inside your tractor’s engine to start to condense. Check the hydraulic fluid, oil, and transmission fluid for any impurities before attempting to start your tractor for the first time. This is also a good time to swap out the filters and check the hoses for leaks and cracks. 

Check Belts and Brakes

Cold can cause your tractor’s belts to contract. In extreme cases, the belts will become brittle and start to crack. The last thing you want is a snapped belt, so give them a quick check. You should also test your tractor’s brakes just to make sure that they haven’t started to rust. 

Charge Battery

Tractor batteries left in the equipment over the winter tend to become drained. Before you take your tractor out, you’ll need to recharge the battery. If your battery refuses to recharge, it’s time for a replacement. Only attempt a jump start as a last resort. 

Replace Fuel

If you forget to add fuel stabilizer to your tractor’s tank before putting it into storage, nothing in the tank will likely be usable by the time spring comes around. Either way, we recommend checking the fuel before attempting to start the tractor. If the fuel appears dark, thick, or full of contaminants like metal flakes, drain your fuel system and refill it.
