Storm Preparation For Your Ag Equipment & Farm
Here in the South, we can get our fair share of storms, especially during hurricane season, when we can get heavy rains and even tornadoes spawning from tropical storms. If you’re a farmer in these conditions, it’s important to do what you can to protect your livestock and your valuable farm equipment. Take these steps the next time the forecast looks bad so you can have some peace of mind while you batten down the hatches.
Secure Animals
Animals can become very frightened of stormy conditions, and they’re in serious danger when there’s a risk of high winds that bring flying debris or flooding. Livestock are also vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
If you have to evacuate your livestock,, do so as soon as possible. It’s always a good idea to have your livestock trailer prepped and ready to go with all the supplies you need in case you have to leave in a rush. If you can’t evacuate, try to get your animals to higher ground under some shelter. Keeping them trapped in a barn can be dangerous in a serious storm.
Prepare Equipment
As for your tools and ag equipment, you’ll want to be prepared by fueling up all of your vehicles and hitching up trailers as needed for escape. Your farm equipment can be stowed in your barn or in a garage rather than being left outside.
