Mahindra boasts an impressive 40,000 employees and a yearly revenue of over $15 billion, and you may be wondering where they started. Here’s a brief history.

Company Development

Following the close of World War II, brothers KC and JC Mahindra, along with their partner Ghulam Mohammed, created the Mahindra & Mohammed Company in the city of Mumbai, India. The company started out producing steel and light commercial vehicles.

When India and Pakistan were partitioned in 1947, Mohammed left India to become the first Finance Minister of Pakistan. So the Mahindra brothers rechristened their enterprise “Mahindra & Mahindra” and went public in 1955.

Tractors

Following their merger with American tractor maker International Harvester, Mahindra began to develop a line of tractors for farm usage, and they became the largest tractor seller in all of India by the 1980s. The company has since taken other companies under its wing and has several divisions, but its farm equipment remains especially popular around the globe.
